A Fair Way to Group Students
Splitting a class into groups by hand takes time and always invites the same complaints — “why is he with them again?” The Classroom Group Generator does it for you in one spin, so every student sees the groups were formed at random. It's perfect for group projects, lab work, reading circles, and station rotations.
Paste your whole class roster at once, choose the number of groups or a fixed group size, and optionally balance each group by gender or a custom label (reading level, house, table number). Everything runs in your browser — no accounts, no student data leaves the page, and it works on the classroom projector or a phone.
When Teachers Use It
Any time you need to divide a class quickly and fairly, without the playground politics:
- Group Projects: Split the class into balanced project teams so students collaborate with new peers each time.
- Lab Partners: Pair or group students for science labs and hands-on stations in one spin.
- Reading & Literature Circles: Rotate reading groups regularly to mix ability levels and personalities.
- Station Rotations: Assign students to centers or rotations without repeating the same clusters.
- Peer Review: Randomly match students for peer feedback so nobody always reviews their best friend.
- PE Teams & Field Trips: Build fair sports teams or field-trip buddy groups the whole class trusts.
How to Split Your Class Into Groups
Paste Your Class Roster
Copy your student list and paste it in — one name per line. Add ", Male" or ", Female" (or your own label) if you want balanced groups.
Choose Groups or Group Size
Pick a number of groups (e.g. 5 groups) or a fixed group size (e.g. 4 students per group). The tool balances the rest.
Spin & Share
Spin the wheel to assign every student, then copy, print, save an image, or share a link to the exact groups.
Classroom Group Generator FAQ
Is this classroom group generator free?
Yes — it is 100% free with no login, no signup, and no limit on how many times you can group your class. Everything runs right in your browser.
How do I split my class into groups?
Paste your class roster (one name per line), choose either the number of groups or the number of students per group, and spin. Every student is assigned to a group at random.
Can I balance groups by gender or ability?
Yes. Tag each name with a gender or your own label (like reading level or table number) and choose Balance by Gender or Balance by Label — the tool spreads those attributes evenly across every group.
Can I save or reuse the groups?
You can copy the groups as text, download a CSV, save an image, print them, or create a share link that reopens the exact same groups — handy for sharing with a co-teacher or a projector.
What if my class doesn't split evenly?
The generator keeps group sizes as close as possible. With 25 students split into 4 groups, you get three groups of 6 and one group of 7 — never a lopsided leftover group of 1.
How many students can it handle?
Any class size. Whether you need 2 groups or 20, the layout stays readable, so it works for small groups and large lecture sections alike.
Can I pick a group leader for each team?
Yes. Turn on Assign Team Leader and the tool randomly designates one student in each group as the leader.
Grouping Students, Without the Drama
Because every assignment is visibly random, students accept the groups and you get back to teaching. Bookmark the Classroom Group Generator and grab fair groups in seconds, any lesson.
Not just for classrooms? The full Random Team Generator works for sports, work, and game nights too.
